Come Along (D&D RP)

Outside in the cold snowy town, Varwyn sits alone as the wind crawls it's way down the winding streets. Not a soul was in sight as the hours passed by. The sun had set, and darkness creeped its way in. When she first arrived, the townspeople advised her to remain indoors, because when the night came, danger would soon follow.

She was gazing down at her sword, it was sharpened to perfection, which was the result of hours of hard work. It had a soft golden glow as if it were alive. She had only acquired this sword two years ago, but she gained a strong bond with it after years of training at the paladin academy. As she looked down at the blade, it reminded her of the difficulties she faced during her time there. After working 25 long years as a bounty hunter for a despicable leader, she sworn to never go back to her old ways, but sometimes she hears the faint echoing screams of her old self as it tempts her to stroll off the path she had carefully built. She clenched her teeth in frustration, she couldn't silence the voice inside her head. She remembered at the academy, her master told her that if she remains pure, its voice would fade away. Two whole years passed since then, so is she doing something wrong?

Her white eyes flashed up from her sword, as a figure approached her from the darkness. It was a large muscular man with a double bladed axe, wearing a cloak made from a winter wolves hide, it dragged in the snow behind him as he walked towards her. When Varwyn arrived to this town, she was supposed to be waiting for someone, but she was blinded by her own thoughts and emotions that her mind fogged over what she was supposed to do. She glared at the figure with such ferocity that it made him stop in his tracks. He looked at her with unease for a moment, not knowing what to say at first. He then pulled out a scroll and held it out for her to read. She did not move from her spot, still absorbed in the mind of her old self. She tightened her grip on her sword as he stood there in silence waiting for her move. "What is this?" She hissed, not an ounce of trust in her voice as she looked at the man. "A message for you, your next mission has been announced." He took a step closer and tossed the scroll in her direction, she caught it in a flash, not moving her eyes from him. He gave her one last look, then turned and walked back into the darkness. Her interest for the scroll overcame her thoughts, and she read the message to herself. She looked one last time where the figure disappeared, and put the scroll into a pocket inside her own cape. She then stood up from her spot, the snow falling from her clothes, and turned into the stables. It was warm inside, the heat instantly cleared her mind, she brushed the remaining snow off of her golden scales and mounted her draft horse and took off into the night.

Saryis heard the muffled cheers of the cult’s celebration from her underground residence for the last two years. The bars rattled as those above ran around doing…well she’s not sure. Cult-y things. She does not know much about their practices (or rather, she simply blocked them out), but that doesn’t matter. Today was the day. She was ready. Makeshift weapon in hand (since her magic would draw too much attention), she waited. It was time for a new guard to take over - he was terribly drunk. There was a wobble in his step and the stench of alcohol on his breath that was strong enough to make Saryis cringe. The guard being relieved of his duties for the night was too excited to join into the festivities to notice. The drunken guard opened the door to bring her whatever foul thing they decided to feed her for today. Saryis doesn’t know much about human anatomy, but she does know how to kill creatures in the wild thanks to the man that raised her, so she took a guess. He immediately drooped over her, painting her worn down clothing red. She gently placed him on the cot. The wound wouldn’t be fatal if they found him in time. “Stay focused!” she reminded herself, “focused on the next step. Next step.” Her hands were shaking. She had done it! But then she realized she did it. There was no turning back now. Part of her wanted to go back into the cell. It seemed easier than what she had to do next, and what the rest of her life might be. She gave herself a moment to calm down. Panic in a life-or-death situation would do her no good. Soon enough Saryis rediscovered her resolve and began searching for something to wear. She hated the thought of wearing the uniform she held in her hands, but the alternative was hypothermia. Making her way through seemingly endless corridors she finally found the staircase that would let her leave this place.
The cold that hit her as she opened the door was both exhilarating and sobering. She was above ground for the first time in two years. In the center of the town there were hundreds of people from all over the world and of all ages gathered to watch a display of fireworks, and Saryis felt what she could only describe as a mix of fear and pity. The next step  was a blur of running around buildings in the deceptively nice looking village until reaching the outskirts. The next part would be the scariest as the cult was located on a flat snowy plain. Her heart was beating so hard it hurt in her chest and she was frozen in place, knowing she wouldn’t have more than two minutes before they would see her. She took a long deep breath before stumbling into a wild sprint. The harsh wind made her ears and hands sting. Not before long the sounds of fireworks turned into panicked yells and blaring horns. There began the vague sound of crunching snow under many feet behind her. That is when she saw the scattered beginnings of a forest. Going deeper and deeper, a mix of adrenaline and old training kicked in. With confusing footprints to follow and no clear scent for their dogs, her pursuers realized they were just running aimlessly and stopped. She was safe for now, but the hunt was far from over.

The snow swirled around Varwyn as she rode down the darkened streets. She slowed her horse to a stop as soon as she reached the front gate, and dug into her saddlebag. Inside, there was a neat assortment of items which were stored in small pockets lining its walls. On the bottom, she pulled out a metal lantern and lit it with a small match. The flame grew and allowed her field of vision to expand, what lied before her was a raging blizzard. She attached the lantern to her her horses saddle, "You ready to go Ronan?" If we move fast, we will get there in a few hours." Ronan flicked his ears back and glared at Varwyn, it was clear that he wasn't amused about the weather. "Oh come on, it will clear once we get down the mountain." Ronan snorted, and they went together out into the blizzard.

After some time had passed, the snow eventually stopped. Around them, a soft blanket of snow covered the earth. Occasional creatures would pop their heads out of where they've been hiding, to see them pass by. She then felt a strong presence, she told Ronan to keep going as she grabbed the lantern and held it out in front of her. She strained her vision looking into the darkness, but what she didn't realize, is that it was the darkness itself which was watching her. All of the sudden the light in her candle ripped out of the glass and flew into the darkness, a form appeared consuming the flame. Quickly thinking, Varwyn casted protection against evil on herself and Ronan, she drew her sword and took off down the mountain. The shadow creature followed behind them, throwing dark flames all around them, she cursed to herself wondering what she should do. With one more spell slot, she turned facing the creature directly, and commanded it to halt. The creature immediately lurched to a stop and menacingly stared us down as we ran. It would take 5 minutes for them to be able to move again, due to her not being at full concentration, but she hoped it would make enough space between them.

Running at full speed, they reached a distance that was far enough away that the creature would take awhile to catch up. The sun began to rise over the mountains around them, the warm glow covering the land around them, with the night fading away. An hour passed, and they reached a large town where people ran amongst one another hurrying to their destinations. It was warm and sunny, with bright luscious trees and flowers sprouting here and there. She took Ronan to a stable and took off his tack and hung it on the stable walls. With a lack of rest, she laid down in the straw and fell into a deep sleep beside him.

Kaitryn woke with a scream on her lips. That dream, It had been a while since she had seen a vision of the future. 50 years, long time. The dream had foretold of death, pain, separation. She laid back down in the peace of the morning meadow, closed her eyes and thought back to the dream. A circus flashed through her mind, a performance opening a cage, and an owl bear attacking the crowd. People were dying as the animal rampaged through the stands, and they couldn’t get away fast enough. Her eyes opened with tears, she could hear the screaming. With a new determination, she stood up and readied to leave camp. With a tug on her consciousness, she started forward praying she would make it, wherever she was supposed to go, before her dream became a reality.

Varwyn awoke from her sleep a few hours later. She stood up from the stall floor and saddled Ronan once again. She lead him outside into the busy streets by the reins, unraveling the message as she walked. "Arrive at 248 Waymar Pass, City of Cridon by 10:30am and consult the barman regarding recent kidnappings in the forest." She walked Ronan two streets down and stopped at an old bar with a job board posted at the front. She tied Ronan to a post and pushed the door open revealing a bunch of people sitting amongst one another drinking their beers. She walked up to the barman and placed the scroll in front of him. "What do you know of this job?" He looked her up and down, "what is your last name?" "It's Witherstone" she replied. "Ah yes, we've been expecting you." He said rubbing his hand against his chin. He went into the back room and entered again holding a poster with a sprawl of letters in no particular order at all, with a paw print smudged in the corner. "A poor young chap came in earlier, he was in a distressed state, but he told me that members of his village were being kidnapped and he needed help." "Ah I see, thank you for the information." She rolled up the scroll and the job poster together and tied a string around it to keep them together.

Zadani Shavari

As the flames grew higher Zadani and her deadbeat, bloodied father hid in the now charred living room of the Shavari residence. "Run Zadani as fast as you can! Get out of here! I'm sorry for how our lives turned out but I need you to run and stay out of sight get as far away as you can!" Her father whisper yelled. In tears she tore away from her father's grip and ran as fast as she could, the young Zadani hid behind a near by tree. Dragonborn after Dragonborn rushed in the burning building, finally coming out of the house, Zadani watched as they threw her, then, father on the ground. Skittering up to his feet the bloodied worn out looking man pleaded with the intruders, the pale white Dragonborn then unsheathed his mighty great sword and swung downwards. The surrounding Dragonborn scanned the outskirts of the residence, their eyes landing on the bright purple horn of a Tiefling girl.

This is the reoccurring nightmare that Zadani has dealt with most of her life, that is until she found her calling in the lyre that hung from the mantle in the old bard's home. She would dance and play music for the poor man, enjoying the long overdue company. After years of living and learning with this bard, they fought and in a huff the old bard sold her to a traveling circus saying she would never be good enough for anyone to love.
