Quote :
Hoofsteps pounded on the soft grass, dirt kicked up as the creature pranced through the trees, weaving between the towering masses. Sunlight was dim through the leaves, casting shadows around the forest. The overcast day was perfect for a day of staying below the radar. A woman sat upon the beast’s back, bow drawn as she looked through the trees and across the border. There had been no sign of misdemeanor upon the borders of her estate, and yet...withdrawing her arrow, she placed it back in her quiver and strung her bow along her back. Perhaps she was overthinking things. The land extended all the way to the beach, and she had no intent on checking down there herself. Not with the parade that followed her. Looking behind her, she saw the small group of men that kept behind her, looking for all the world that they were nothing but her companions. She didn’t need a group of eyes on her. “Come along, Arthaenax,” she whispered to her steed’s ear, and he let out a snort before she squeezed his sides and he kicked up dirt as they sped away from her followers. Their calls of distress and their horses’ neighing caused a grin to rise upon her face as she galloped from their watching, their sounds growing further away the more they ran. Her dark teal cape flapped behind her, and she had to hold onto her hat to keep it from flying away. Yet the freedom she felt while the wind hit her face was nothing short of extraordinary. She kept her eyes set on the borderlines, riding alongside them as she breezed through the outskirts of her territory. It was a beautiful place she resided in, and expanded for a long while, though she could only go so far before she hit the towns and exited her Estate. Going until she could only hear her horse’s hoofbeats below her, she calmed him down to a trot, then to a walk as they exited the expanse of forest. Glancing to the right, she could see her towering mansion in the distance, a sign of honor and respect she had earned from her heritage. Despite the big space however, she never found it appealing. Nobody else but staff resided within the walls. You couldn’t find lifelong friends in the walls of your own home. Out where the docks held ships and the marketplace held vendors was where the livelihood of the Kingfisher Estates and beyond truly lived. Parties were glamorous, but you couldn’t hold a party everyday. Turning her dark chocolate horse around, she pondered racing past her entourage and teasing them for losing sight of her. Her steed’s white stockings were already covered in dirt and grime, so what was the harm? She began to nudge him forward, when a loud trumpet was heard once, then again. Her head turned to her home to see a flag being hoisted above the gardens. Oh how wonderful. A scowl formed on her face, and she clicked her tongue to gallop back to the large abode. It seemed something had arrived for her, and she was not pleased to be ending her day so early. Catching only two rabbits and losing track of her guards for three measly minutes was nothing accomplished. But, the call and the flag signaled her immediate attention was to be brought to her. So she had to oblige and get back to the boring political life she was born to. So much for a day in the sun.

Upon arriving back into the home and handing her cloak and hat to a staff member, she was greeted by a messenger who held a scroll in his hands once she made her way to the entrance lobby. Why didn’t they just take him to her study, and leave the scroll there? She wouldn’t have to willingly engage in any formalities that way. But, she took the paper from the man, seeing the wax seal on the outside. A nobleman? Raising a brow, she exchanged a look with the messenger, who seemed to know the answer more than she did. She checked if the seal had been broken beforehand, and upon seeing that it had not been tampered with, she unrolled the paper and was somewhat shocked to see noble writing and a nobleman’s signature upon the bottom. A summons? When was the last time she had received one of those? Longer than usual, she suspected. But at least it would get her out of the house. “Please gather my travel belongings,” she told a nearby butler, rolling up the paper and placing it in her quiver, watching him bow and race to go get them. After sending the messenger off, she ran her hand down her braided raven hair and sighed. Was this a true mission? If it was lasting anywhere beneath a month, she wasn’t sure if she would be all that enthused. The farther she could get away from her duties, the better. Paperwork for weeks on end was nothing to be proud of. Though she realized that her attire was not entirely the best suited for meeting with a fellow knight. So she walked to her enormous suite, placing her weapons on their respective holders before she made her way into her closet. Though she could opt for something fancy, perhaps a fitting dress that flowed past her ankles, a summons wasn’t calling for a gentle tea party. Upon looking through what she had, she opted to instead wear a regular set of fitting cloth attire and donned her kingfisher armor, a silver set with teal accents surrounding the various winged engravings and portraits of the sea and the bird namesake. If she was going to announce herself as a willing participant, she would represent her march. Leaving the closet once she had herself together, she walked out to see that her travel belongings had been placed on the bed, placed with perfect precision into saddlebags. She spent hours after each mission making sure each item was in its precise location to ensure maximum efficiency for whenever she needed anything. Picking up the saddlebags after donning her sheath and favorite rapier, she headed down to Artheanax, prepared him with his tack and the bags, and set off for the noble knight’s realm. Who knew what she would be getting into.

The sunlight peeked through the covers of the buildings to protect the lords and ladies gallivanting through the town center of Worthguard as they mingled. There was a soft, ambient chatter of nobles as they ambled to gawk at the displays in admiration, each providing praise about the collection the royal galleria had to offer. There were several stores and places to buy exotic goods and services, and it was treated like a marketplace but its prices were tailored to the wealthy. Common villagers never meandered into this district due to belittlement and mockery from the nobles. Food and shelter were necessities, unlike the nobles who would spend more on dresses and attires than those things. The twinkling of gems and exotic wear caught the eye of a man while he lounged against a chair at one of the outdoor tables at a lavish tavern. He was shielded from the heat of the day from the burgundy linen awning just above his head for protection. Eyeing the assortment of ornaments, royal clothing, and having tested the horderves for the day, he sat back and enjoyed a glass of red wine while breathing in the coastal air. The subtle cries of gulls from afar was satisfying; knowing it was well out of his reach. He observed the groups of passing nobles and then the items on display at a comfortable distance. He took a sip of his drink, which was cupped between his fingers, a regal manner. His own attire was about as formal and extravagant as any of the lords and ladies here, if not more so, and Xavier prided himself with it. He adorned himself in a white hooded tailcoat jacket with burgundy embellishments, with a single leather pauldron to accompany the attire. The pauldron was connected to a white shawl, which was draped over his left shoulder and came down to his lower thigh. To top it off, he wore a wide leather belt with brass accents, which matched his tall, brown leather boots donned on his feet. His legs were crossed, and his other arm positioned around the back of the chair which indicated his satisfaction and comfort. One would have almost been surprised to see such a man appear so complacent in a marketplace for nobles. He was more at home here than some of the wealthy.
Taking another sip of wine, with the sweet yet bitter taste at his tongue, he examined each display a second time over, and was surprised when he was granted a visit from the town courier. The boy's face was beat red from the heat of the day, sweat was dotted along his brow. He was devoid of breath when he had stepped under the awning, alongside Xavier. In his hands was a scroll, sealed by a wax seal from the kingdom. There was no mistaking the iconic engraving of the Southern Empire, so refined and formal. Yet no surprise or curiosity dawned over Xavier's face as he was handed the documentation. He was about to make a lighthearted remark toward the courier, but the boy had dashed around the corner before he was able and so he simply held the scroll in his right hand, set his drink aside, and broke the seal with the dagger he had stowed away in his belt. He was still idly tapping his elevated foot while he unraveled the paper held in his fingers and scanned over its contents. His expression remained unpassionate while he read over the summons for a new assignment. It appeared as though he would be meeting his partner after all, and so he leaned back on his feet and stood from his chair after having read the summoning. Figuring he had spent enough time in the noble district anyhow, he turned his sights onto his drink and promptly finished it. Then Xavier strode from under the protection of the awning as the warm sunlight crept across his figure. The midday heat was incredibly refreshing, which surprised him considering heat was usually the first thing he would gripe about. He basked in its light for a moment or two as he contemplated whether or not to change his attire. After the thought, he decided that it was for the best, and so he returned home shortly after in order to dress for the occasion and leave for the knight's headquarters.

While he had changed, Xavier had kept his leather bracers, wide belt, and boots, but now wore a metal pauldron with a leather vest. The vest had a long sleeve on its left and a high collar. It was split in the center with the right half being burgundy in coloration and the other half being a light leather; to top off the attire, he threw on a cream colored hooded cowl made of fleece before making sure he had his sword and coin purse in hand. As he was now on the docks, Xavier stepped into a gondola, which he had just paid to take up the water corridor towards the kingdom. From there, he would travel on foot until he received his mission and met his assigned partner. To his calculations, he would arrive on time if not a little late, which was precisely how he liked it. Xavier now sat down on the boat's passenger seat as the rower pushed from the dock and deeper into the city, he lounged back with his hands rested on his knees. He waited and watched the village houses slip by, his foot tapping as he went.

Through the marketplace as she rode, she saw the people waving, citizens expressing their delight to see her among the commonfolk. It always surprised her to see such a reaction from them. She was not an extraordinary woman, and had never done anything to drastically improve their lives. The only thing she could imagine being the reason would be the wealth of the economy under her ruling, and perhaps the removal of the worry of dragons looming overhead. Being a knight of the Septronian empire had its perks she supposed. Bowing her head to the occasional villager, smiling at the rest, she casually made her way through the crowds and tried to console Artheanax whenever a child ran into the street ahead of them or people crowded his sides. The beast was not fond of being crowded. She patted his neck as they rode, and gazed at his tack in the sunlight once they were beyond the main cluster of townspeople. The stallion was adorned with teal leather, engravings of wings along his cheeks and decorated with silver plates in draconian style. His saddle blanket shared similar decor, and his saddle was made of only the finest leather in the Septronian empire, fitted to her specifications and was perfect for travel or archery. Because she was on a noble summons, her steed also wore a harness on his chest bearing her family crest, as well as a banner hanging down just in front of his hind legs that represented her crest. He was quite popular when he strode around town looking fancy, especially with his short cut black and white mane, but the male would beg to differ. At least he was calming down now, she thought to herself as they entered the wooded pathway beyond the Kingfisher Estates. It would be at least a couple hours’ ride to the place, but she had enough provisions and the energy for that early afternoon to make the trip. It was nothing she couldn’t handle. Nudging her steed, he picked up his pace until they were at full gallop, racing ahead through the tangle of forest to get to her destination.

After passing through a few towns and eating a snack of cheese and bread while she rode, Juniper was just about finished with her ride, both literally and mentally. She loved to spend time with her loyal stallion, but the armor she wore did not make things much easier. It did not help either that she got dozens of questions from the citizens, especially when she arrived in the nobleman’s lands. They wanted to know about her mission (which she knew little of as of yet), who her partner was, what they were going to achieve, what she was doing, why her horse liked apples more than carrots, a wide variety that she didn’t care to take too long explaining if she could. Once she got into the castle, she could relax and be on her way to wherever it was she needed to go. She thanked the vendor she was at, pocketing the bundle of arrows she purchased and placing them in her quiver before stopping by a few other shops, her horse trailing behind. It was a quaint little place, she had to admit. It wasn’t as nice as the village she was near at home, but this one was suitable. Juniper eventually got everything that her eye caught, and she placed it into her saddlebags or ate it if it was edible, then hopped back onto her stallion and trotted the rest of the way to the castle ahead. It was certainly magnificent, the flags of the nobleman waving high above and the peaks piercing the clouds. This man had wealth. Then again, most knights did, and who wouldn’t want a giant castle to be like a king? If she wasn’t annoyed with the vast empty spaces within large houses, considering she had nobody to fill it with other than staff, perhaps she would have been inclined to build such a thing.

When Juniper arrived at the gates, she halted before the guards, gesturing to the castle beyond. “I am Marchioness Juniper Ravenmore of Kingfisher Cove Estates, I am here to see your leige.” They gave her a curious look, and she gestured to the crest upon her horse’s chest. “Surely you must know me as a loyal knight of His Highness.” When they still didn’t seem inclined to let her inside, she pulled out her summons and showed it, and when they finally opened the gates, she huffed with annoyance and trotted beyond them without a second glance. “Why employ such useless subjects,” she muttered under her breath, steering her beast towards the stables and letting the stablehand boys take him to cool him off and take care of him while she was inside. Now that she was before the home herself, she had taken for granted how large the place was. How many rooms did it really hold? She doubted she would get a tour, even if she asked, as she had a duty to fulfill. But seeing all of those pointless empty spaces would perhaps help remind her of why she didn’t have the largest mansion in the kingdom. Adjusting her armor upon her, she made her way inside, following her guide to where she was summoned as she gazed around the interior. Quite a beautiful place, she had to admit, with all the decor pointing towards the noble’s family crest and lineage, as well as his land’s colors. It was admirable that someone else was as passionate as she about what he owned and ruled over.

The longboat rocked ever so slightly on the surface of the water as the gondola steered down the canal. Xavier aloofly turned his head to discern the pattering of footsteps on the docks to his either side, belonging to village children as they chased each other from house to house. Villagers located along these canals were less selective about their attires, having less coin than most other nobles. They wore a veil shawl at the very least but had little shame in buying goods from local peasants or lesser known merchants; the notion was always curious to him and somewhat entertaining. It was different from the behavior of other nobles, who would scoff for even considering the idea and most likely turn their cheek. But while he rode the longboat down to his designated port, he took the time to enjoy the bustling cityscape just out of his reach. Women carrying baskets of produce lifted them while the young children scampered around the waterway. Their small frames bounded over barrels of fish and goods brought in from ships at sea as a euphony of laughter carried into the air. The salty odor of the ocean coast, mixed with the reek of chum and other assortments of seafood was well accustomed to his nose. He told himself that he would likely move to this location at some time or another to gather an understanding of the culture and try whatever new experiences it had to offer. He tilted back in the gondola as it was guided down the canal. When he did, he grabbed the shawl made of fleece and flipped the hood over his head to keep the light from hurting his eyes.

When the destination had come into view a long while later, the man rose from his seat, paid the Gondolier, and set himself off of the boat as it swayed beneath his weight. His leather boots thumped on the wood as he stepped off to continue his trek to his superior's estate. All the while the sun was still beating down on him. It was fortunate, he supposed, that he could find shade in the cover of the concrete buildings surrounding him, but it was clear that his previous enjoyment of the heat was quickly beginning to deteriorate. But while his mind protested, he pressed on for the tiring hour long journey, only stopping to sprinkle water on his face and to grab a bite to eat. Though getting to the summoning on time was a pressing concern, he refused to allow anything to get in front of his necessities. The townspeople around him excitedly prattled and talked about a noble that had passed through just a little while ago; Xavier picked up the chatter but he made no attempts to really piece any of it together and he passed through those villages after he had sated his desire for food.
Having eaten his fill of the city's delicacies and sweets, Xavier had finally arrived at the gates of the nobleman's home, and he had paused to tilt his head upward and analyze the structure. The house's banner's flapped ever so gently in the breeze, alongside the flag of the Septronian Empire that the South served under. Royal colors of yellow, purple, and black flashed its display of nobility for the Southern Kingdom. It reeked of nobility, but in a way that he found almost faintly amusing. The man admired the palace and its grand stature but he found himself jesting at the Empire quietly, "I do love a good cause." He chuckled a bit and tossed his chin toward the guards. They seemed to have acknowledged his presence. Xavier exhaled as he dropped his lighthearted comment and approached them without another word. With their armor glinting as they stayed at their posts, the guards had examined him from afar and asked what his business was with the noble. "I'd rather not waste my breath explaining," answered Xavier as he retrieved the scroll that had been folded in half and neatly stored in the pocket attached to his belt. Their armor was incredibly bland. His nose even crinkled at the lost potential. Estate guards of this magnitude should be flaunting in style, even when doing something as mundane as guarding, but he watched as they accepted his documentation. Having seen the seal, they permitted him to enter, and they stepped aside. He arched his brow at them when they had done so before strolling into the castle's courtyard to be met with a guide of sorts, who was to escort him to his superior. The escort wore a light blue, slim doublet with squared shoulders, and white ruffs sticking from the collar. Adorned on his head was a Tudor flat cap with a feather. Xavier admired the hat if any, but was not particularly impressed with the attire. Still, it was better than the tin men he found out front. Picking up his head, Xavier follow from behind as the guide took him through the courtyard and into the interior of the castle. The cool air and shade felt heavenly from the journey. He sauntered inside and he stepped casually down the first room without a second glance. There were more banners and emblem directed towards the estate and when he allowed himself the opportunity to appraise the décor, he marveled at its brilliance. Not just for the colors however, but for the expense behind it. Taken back by the glistening embroidery and jewel encrusted furnishings, he had to blink back to reality so he wouldn't keep idling by the doorway. Though he followed the man at a distance, he hadn't hesitated to stop at every picture, every sculpture, and each décor along the way. There were jewels here that Xavier hadn't seen in many years. He would comment on the different items and how difficult they were to come by, having been well educated on these things, he wasted no time sharing his expertise and fascination. The guide was patient but obviously a little less than helpful at answering his questions.
Xavier had his arm wrapped around his chest to hold his other arm at the elbow while it was bent upward so he could caress his chin and relish the jewels on the artifact before him. "As much as I'm sure you appreciate these items..." The guide stated, but he fell silent as Xavier had raised his forefinger as a subtle gesture to be quiet. "Allow me to bask in my envy for one moment longer." He said before breathing in and accepting it. He smiled. "Marvelous." His dark brown eyes folded onto the guide who began to gesture him onward. He followed at a leisurely pace but urged himself not to be distracted again for the sake of time.

The marquess meandered through the hall to her destination, her eyes being caught by the vibrant colors and bright sunlight streaming through the windows along the sides of the outer hall. What a magnificent view, to look out and see nothing but green and lush foliage. Though she could say the same for her forest, the grass always looks greener on the other side. She stopped at one of the said windows, gazing out over the slope that the castle sat upon. Though it was minor, you could see some of a mile to the distance, a few of the taller buildings that a village had created further into the land. A windmill spun in the sky, the peak of a house just barely scraped the top of the trees of the expansive woodland. A small society beyond the walls of the castle. How much different were they to the people that she was with? They obviously had no docks, or at least none that she had seen, so fish must be a luxury or at least a rarity. Their entertainment likely differed, spending their days in the trees or hunting, perhaps planting gardens or charting new territory. Her people enjoyed fishing and playing in the ocean, collecting shells on the beach and admiring the creatures like crabs that would appear, along with the forests that separated civilization from the ocean. Such drastic changes, yet most would likely say that the two territories were alike. However she had no interest in moving here. The mixture of sea breeze and tree bark was plenty enough for her. Turning on her heel, she made her way down the rest of the hall, boots thumping on the wooden floors and echoing through the towering ceilings. Which, she noticed, had beautiful beams stretched across them. A fitting touch to a forestry town.

Upon arriving before the door of the study she would enter to speak with the nobleman requesting her, she pulled out the scroll and showed it to the two guards that stood there. They were polite and accepted her presence quickly, one opening the door to the room. Though once she stepped inside, she didn’t see the nobleman anywhere. Was he absent? She had to stand in the doorway for only a moment to grasp that the man that summoned her was not even here to greet her. What kind of introduction was that? If this situation was as urgent as the scroll had said, where in the dragon-forsaken world would the devil be? Well, if he wasn’t going to show his face, she would simply wait here and take her time. The door was closed once she fully stepped inside, and she found herself within a small room, more like a library than a study. Walnut bookshelves lined both sides, a giant window out the back looking to the towering trees that loomed above the window itself and a giant rug on the floor beneath a matching walnut desk. Everything was tidy, but cramped. Why shove so many huge objects into one room? It was like the man couldn’t build himself a bigger area, which was very unlikely to be the case guessing on everything she had seen so far. Even the two chairs in front of the desk just...took up far too much room, not to mention his giant chair behind the desk that she was not fond of. Stepping across the study, which hardly took any time at all, she noticed the space behind his desk chair and she raised a dark brow. Why so much empty space behind his chair? All of the items were too lavishly huge, yet here was this space between the back of his chair and the window. Strange and peculiar man indeed. Satisfied with her search, figuring out her first impression by the appearance of the man’s workspace, she plopped down in a chair and crossed an ankle over her knee, propping her chin on a closed fist atop the left armrest. Cozy chair, she had to admit, with its purple tones and plush cushions, but wildly unnecessary for a business environment. The sooner this was over, the sooner she could enjoy the expanse that was the outdoors, perhaps take a ride through the dense trees they had everywhere here inland of the kingdom.

Though the exotic drapery and bejeweled furnishing had ensnared his attention, the man continued down the hall with a passionate glow resonating from his eyes. Whomever designed this castle must have had a flair for La Verdalle décor. He admired the taste, it was a common theme but it was hardly given much of a chance among nobles who knew little of the country. It was an attempt, but this was the most successful representation he had ever seen and it was admirable. The repetitive tapping of their footsteps persisted until the escort in the light blue doublet had showcased the interior and decided to part ways. Xavier faced the hallway as the man slipped away. "Seemed that went relatively well," he quipped almost sarcastically as he rubbed his jawline to examine the two knights stationed at the far end of the hallway, still in that ridiculously uninspiring armor this handsome castle so highly valued. He could almost scoff. Xavier began to step lightly toward the door at the other end. He hardly had to present the scroll before they gestured him inside as though they had been anticipating his arrival. They were, so that explained it. Upon having the rustic castle door creak open for him pass through. He strode in. The door fastened behind him. Xavier brushed his shoulder almost a tad dramatically before raising his gaze to a woman reclined at a chair in this surprisingly small room. She possessed straight raven black hair, fair skin, and had arrayed herself in a peculiar silver plated armor, which was accented in teal coloring. Part of him wished to drag the knights into this room to show that armor and style could be accomplished. The teal adornment was simple, but effective. He clicked his tongue at the notion however. She was faced away with one leg crossed over the other. He had to furrow his brows in an amused fashion at the room size before he introduced himself. Xavier recognized immediately that if there were only two seats and she was in one, then she was the one determined to be his partner. He got her attention in a confident manner as he stepped around,"wondrous to finally meet you, I am Xavier." He held out his hand for her to shake as a friendly gesture with a smile to accompany it. "You must be Lady Ravenmore." Xavier presented suavely. "I have to say I quite like that design in your armor. It seems to be Asearian paint from the coloration. Magnificent."

As Juniper sat and stared outside at the leaves brushed by the taint of wind, her senses were alerted to the sound of footsteps outside, then to the door opening. Had the nobleman of the castle finally arrived? Well, if so, she wasn’t about to make a grand gesture of welcome for the man. He had left her waiting. Continuing to look out the window, she waited for the man to be seated until her vision was blocked by the lower half of a being. The shock sent her gaze up to see a man’s face. Judging by his looks, he was not the owner of this castle, and knowing her actual political knowledge, he was not indeed this land’s owner either. Surely he would adorn himself with purple and yellow, but he instead had browns and creams. How dreadfully boring of a combination. He introduced himself as Xavier, and the name brought an image to her head, putting the name with the face. “Ah yes, Sir Xavier. Lovely to see you as always.” If he wasn’t the nobleman she had come to see, then this was definitely her partner. She shook his hand, holding it firmly before letting it go. She made no effort to stand, partly because he was in the way. Juniper was surprised however by his complementation of her armor, and she looked down at it for a moment before returning his gaze, her eyes adjusting to him from the light in the window behind him. “Why yes it is, thank you. The bright colors represent the mighty kingfisher and the first silver dragon that was slain by my ancestors. An unstoppable force. And you, Sir Xavier...I am surprised you are underdressed for a summoning.” She gave him a once over. Perhaps his attire was not the worst she had seen, but if she was to be seen in public with another knight, she would have preferred someone who at least had some indication that he was a nobleman, or a knight of the kingdom at all. Why would you ever be casual? He was wearing casual clothes for a noble, but even so, it was not armor, no brooch or family crest anywhere she could see. Why were they even paired if this was the case? Did he have some spectacular talent she had not heard of? Or perhaps it was simply drawing names from a helm. “Have you not any representation of your family, your origin? We may be about to slay a dragon, if you are going to do so, then I would want to bring honor to my namesake.” She reached out a hand, moving him aside a step before she stood to her feet, placing her hands on her waist. “And no weapons, either? Unless I am mistaken, I see none on you. I am deeply confused by you, Sir Xavier. You are a strange man to be partnered with.” Juniper would have many questions for the castle owner once he arrived. If a dragon came into the study right now, Xavier would be dead within moments. Unless the dragon happened to nibble on his shoulder, in which perhaps he would be alright. But maybe she was overthinking. The next thought in her head was not that, however. No, I am a marquess. It is impossible for me to overthink anything. I must be keenly aware of whoever is accompanying me, and if this knight has lack of brains, or an overdose of confidence, then perhaps I have a bone to pick.

She became aware of his presence and gave a word of an introduction before taking his hand with her own and shaking it. Once Lady Ravenmore released her grip, he retrieved his hand, and situated himself comfortably in his seat. As customary, the man crossed his right leg over the other knee with his chin raised in a collective manner. She whisked a description of the significance of her armor and crest. Though his ears remained aloofly fixed on her description, his eyes wandered about the room, going from object to object carelessly. “Why yes it is, thank you. The bright colors represent the mighty kingfisher and the first silver dragon that was slain by my ancestors. An unstoppable force. And you, Sir Xavier...I am surprised you are underdressed for a summoning.” He was left to pause at the remark and ponder its meaning. Whatever could she have meant by underdressed? He was not adorned in armor but Xavier found such a drab thing unsuitable for his liking. His attire was not atypical but it was better off than a shell of metal. He crinkled his brow in confusion before arching it high up as he soaked in her comment, truly tasting its sting. Xavier's regard for this conversation slowly dwindled until his expression had completely washed into a dull, disinterested veil. She raved about namesake's now, family origins, and the sort. She even had the gall to stand on her feet to announce her verdict of him and her conclusion about him not possessing any weapons. Once she had set her hands on her hips and stood over him, he had fully turned his attention away and began examining his nails at this rather trivial turn of events. He leaned back coolly with an uncaring guise clutched to his face. She had probed at every ounce of his being before even breathing in, or so it seemed. Her only mistake was believing that her opinion had mattered to him in the slightest. He sighed disinterestedly and muttered out the words, "you are so very petty," as his eyes rolled to her. He clasped the handle of his dagger situated on the other side of his belt and lethargically lifted it so she could be proven wrong. He had a brass finish cutlass sword at his other side as well, which she was unable to see from her current position. Had she have not jumped to conclusions, she wouldn't have appeared so foolish. "Marvelous. Look at how you so easily sprung to belittle me? Fortunately, your words are empty because you know nothing of me and I don't have to prove anything to you. Such behavior is quite unnerving for a supposed noble. You dress like one but you can't stand within a minute of a stranger before making a fuss? At the very least hold your thoughts to yourself, even if you are burning with envy. It's childish. Simply improper." Xavier retorted simply. He casted an look off to the side and slid his dagger into its sheath and away from view. He emitted a more sour attitude but his face remained dull and uncaring. The man puffed. "Really, I'm tickled by this hospitality. You may very well be a kingfisher at heart if you dive blindly at every opportunity to deride other nobles."

Juniper found herself scowling as the fancy man pulled out a dagger, and then gestured to the sword along his side. Seems she was proven wrong. As a noblewoman, she was not entirely pleased, but she had to admit that at least he kept them hidden. It could come in handy, however she would have much preferred to see them in plain sight for the purpose of this meeting. And petty? She was not petty, and she wasn’t going to let him throw words at her without thinking about them first. Envious, petty...he had grossly mistaken who he was sitting before. Lifting her chin, she sat down roughly in her chair, leaning over to him with narrowed dull blue eyes. “A noble should be judging their company very particularly, Sir Xavier. If I cannot trust that you are suited for a mission, then I will take matters into my own hands. The cards of politics will not always play in your direction.” Taking a once over of him again, she took out an arrow from her quiver and began to play with it in her free hand. The arrow head was painted teal, the shaft a sturdy oak wood and the fletching sporting fine clipped feathers dyed pale orange and white. “I am surprised you took such offense to my critiques. A knight of the Septronian empire should be proclaiming his worth and name to the rest of the world, to take accomplishments and better your namesake. I am simply astonished that you have no embellishment on your person.” Lifting the arrow, she turned it as she showed it to him. “Even my very arrows show the pride of my lands. When I hunt, I take down every animal with the strength that my people proclaim. A kingfisher is acclaimed for its dagger-like beak, and as the Kingfisher Cove Marquess, I will pierce my prey and the dragons with as much ferocity as a dragon itself. My name is my pride, and I will always carry it as such. Why do you hold no pride for your family name, sir? A man so worked up over his appearance surely would have noticed the missing detail of his crest upon his breastplate, at the very least.” She glanced at her arrow once again, placing it smoothly back into her quiver before resting her hand on the pommel of her rapier, an ornate orb which could represent a seashell or a kingfisher egg. Every part of her was a nod to her birthplace, to the estates she was born to rule. Her siblings were not as enthused, but her first steps carried her to a run. It was no question who would be running the estates. Why would she ever be ashamed of who she was born as? The man beside her certainly seemed to be, and for that she would have to investigate. Or perhaps the man would give her a depressing story of his past. Wouldn’t that be just a lovely start?

He gave a suppressed chuckle but returned his gaze to the room after the woman situated herself back into her seat. She shot him a narrow-eyed look and leaned in towards his face, to which, Xavier crinkled his nose somewhat disgustedly. He was moderately repulsed by having her come so closely into his personal space. “A noble should be judging their company very particularly, Sir Xavier. If I cannot trust that you are suited for a mission, then I will take matters into my own hands. The cards of politics will not always play in your direction.” He said as he slightly leaned back, "well perhaps you could lean in the other direction." He huffed. His vacant look dropped to her arrow as she played with it and he inched himself back into his comfortable lounging position in the chair. Then the man propped his elbow against the back of his seat and continued to sway his foot that was elevated across his other knee. Hardly giving her much eye contact, he retorted in a snarky way about her comment about 'bringing glory and honor to his namesake.' "Really. I am unable to contain my excitement. I'm whelmed by it actually." He clicked his tongue as he turned his cheek to survey the bookshelves. It was strange to see how barren the room was. His thoughts carelessly dropped Lady Ravenmore's fanatic devoutness to her so called people, but he couldn't his chuckling at her declaration about her arrows. "When I hunt, I take down every animal with the strength that my people proclaim. A kingfisher is acclaimed for its dagger-like beak, and as the Kingfisher Cove Marquess, I will pierce my prey and the dragons with as much ferocity as a dragon itself." That sounded somewhat pitiful considering how small a kingfisher was, especially alongside a dragon. He could only cudgel one's brains about why someone would pick such a small bird to represent a dragon slaying family. Perhaps it was deliberately chosen to be such an oxymoron. Bizarre. The woman then offered a question regarding his own family name and why there was no crest on his attire. It was at this point when Xavier rubbed his forehead at the headache that had been caused by the annoying question. His eyes still wandered about the room however."Oh no, it's not missing." He stated and smirked faintly. "Just deliberately misplaced." Having examined the room enough, Xavier leaned out and set his palm up against his cheek subtly. A dismayed exhale escaped his lips. He finally couldn't help himself and he said snidely, "you are so right, I should bask in the admiration of others. Everyone should care about what I do and whenever I accomplish event the most minor of feats, and I should proudly wave my banner and announce how proud I am! I have most certainly not lived in a bubble all my life, and I would never presume things of others because I know that not everyone does things my way. I am supposed to give my family honor after all. Why would I ever dishonor my family by being so ignorant?" Xavier then sent her a pleasing, innocent smile to make his cheeky comment all the more potent.

What kind of man asked her to watch where she put herself? By the looks of things, he was a noble below her, and though they were both knights, she was sure that she could put him in his place without consequence. She was not amused by his behavior. Obliging him however, she straightened, watching the man gaze around the room like she did previously, listening to him prattle on. Yet when he stated that his crest was deliberately misplaced...she was astonished. What kind of person was he to completely disregard his ancestry, his nobility?! Even further, he began to insult her very being, mocking her values. Her eyes were wide with shock, and when he slid a smile her way to put the icing on the pastry, she wished to slap him hard enough to send him out of his chair. How dare he?! Her cheeks grew red as she pondered the ways she could strangle the cockiness from him, but simply stared at him cooly and tightened her grip on the pommel of her rapier. Oh how she wished she could even just stab him, just a poke to make him shut up. “Despite your mocking, you should be taking all of it very seriously. Titles are not handed out to those unqualified to receive them, and if you are born into it then you have the duty to uphold what you have been given as a birthright. A noble isn’t worth anything without his or her title. And by the way, sir ‘I do what I want’, if you wish to even keep your rank as a knight of the empire, I would take my station more seriously.” If only the noble of the castle would come in and weigh in, agree with her on the subject. How many nobles and royals could truly think in the way Xavier did? It was uncanny how carefree he was. If this was her abode, she wouldn’t allow him here again without a proper acknowledgement of his noble title and family crest. Who could justify that you were a man of power without showing it? Wealth didn’t necessarily mean you had any worthwhile title. It just meant you got it from one shady place or another, perhaps have a trade that was so much of a niche that it made you a comfortable living. Xavier, though, she was certain did not have any of the above. He was just a pompous, ego-filled husk of a skull living in the body of a sloth, camouflaging as an intelligent human being who had worth to his name. Giving him the proper title did not sound all that appealing when she stared at the man so willing to belittle her name. To even think he was graced with her presence was revolting. Yet here he was, sneering at her lecture and disregarding the important meaning behind having nobility at all. He was a disgrace to all of the empire, and the noble or royal who knighted him should take back their claim.

The flushing of her cheeks and the enlarging of her eyes only indicated to him of a job well done. Of course his saucy smile dissolved and he turned away, admitting that he enjoyed seeing that expression but only for a good second or two. Anything after that was only pitiful. He folded his arms as a sign that he disengaged whatever quarrel they established. He decided it was pointless if she was going to be so uncooperative. Every comment she made, he only felt it necessary to retort back. 'It's not like I didn't try to make a good impression at the start,' he presumed quietly. 'I even complimented her attire, but seems as though I am resorted to defend myself. Really?' It had to have been his luck. His thoughts were all that saved him from the protest of the women idling beside him. He listened but only barely. "I believe nobles are people, regardless of their title. Amazing concept, I know. It might take a while to wrap your small mind around that one." He held his tongue on account of where he wanted to take that argument. 'Don't want to offend the hierarchy of knights, now do I?' But he snipped back shortly after. "I believe we are done. Not another word or I may end up vaulting out of the window to escape or allowing you the honor of killing me here to be done with it." Xavier teased somewhat lightheartedly, he smirked at the window across from the desk, still lounging in his chair with one leg crossed.

The marquess was prepared to knock the man down a few pegs, teach him a lesson about the importance of nobility. Yet the man turned, and by his tone of voice after she could tell that he was finished with her. If that told her anything, it told her that he wasn’t going to engage in a battle he could not win. He could throw insults all day long, but it didn’t add anything to the conversation. He even decided to make a sly comment about his murder by her hands. She had never met a more infuriating man. She shut her mouth and turned her head away from him, making a choice to avoid any further words with him. Even though he would be her partner for whatever they were about to be assigned to, she would let him sit in his bubble and soak in all of his ego to rebound for the next time he wanted to spout nonsense. This would not be as pleasant as she previously expected it to be. Crossing her legs again, she gazed at the trees and soaked in the silence for the time being.

It had been too fussy of a day. So many things to do, so many people wanting attention, so many papers being placed on the desk. It was exhausting and keeping the castle far too busy. This summoning of two The noble greeted the guards outside, and they bowed as they opened the door and let the ruler inside. Well-crafted leather boots thunked against wood, then carpet, an ornate cape of purple with golden streaks fluttering behind as the noble walked around the chairs, to the desk, finally sitting in the large chair with a smirk. “Welcome, Sir Xavier, Lady Ravenmore.”

The noble sitting before them was Lady Abi’Laark, a woman with striking blonde hair and fine fitted clothing, dark pants with a cream dress shirt covered by a vibrant purple vest. The vest was embroidered with small golden accents, especially along the shoulders and edges. A golden necklace hung down from her waves of hair, displaying a bright orb of blue that offset her entire outfit, sitting just below the brooch that clasped her cape to her shoulders and down her back. Her eyes pierced the both of them, scanning their presence. “I’m so pleased you both could make it, I have been so busy that sitting down and actually talking with anyone other than advisors and other higher nobility is a rarity. It is such a relief to spend even just a minute with two fellow knights.” Scanning through the papers before her, she let out an audible ‘ah’ and picked up the stack she was looking for, flipping through them. “Yes, now I am refreshed again. I called you both because of an issue I am having near the edge of my territory, off to the East. Badgers have completely infested one of the towns, and are causing havoc. I don’t know how those little monsters have been making such progress, but they are upsetting the entire society over there and I have no way to fix it. The badgers dig holes and create holes and sinking areas, and along with their presence come other ferocious rodents. I am simply not in the mood to deal with such a thing, and since you, Lady Ravenmore are experienced with tackling populations of animals, I thought you would be the best for that. Now as for you, Sir Xavier,” she scanned him over, tapping her chin before she met his eyes, “I called you in for two things. One, I desperately need to know how you dress yourself so fine. You somehow always look like you belong when you walk into a room, and as for me, well…” She gestured to herself. “I own an extremely wealthy part of land, yet I cannot look the part. It is almost embarrassing to notice the stares of other knights and nobility. I want you both to stay here for a day or two to figure that out. And, after that, you will be accompanying Lady Ravenmore to the town of Cardimont and helping rebuild. You know how to talk to people, I assume, and therefore can figure out whatever it is they are going to need.” She waved her hand around for emphasis. “Having a knight of the realm there, or well two, will make the process easier on my people. You both can restore the community. You will be compensated plenty for your time, of course. I want the rodents and pests gone within a month’s time, and the rebuilding will take however long it takes. I’m sure someone else will want to grab you for your services, whatever they may be, so once you have things set up and people are settling into their duties, you can come to me and I will pay you accordingly, by whatever means we agree on. Now…” She crossed her arms on the desk, leaning over with a sly smile. “What would nobles prefer to be given for their time helping their superior?”

Observing the different hues in the sky lying just outside the window, Xavier continued to bob his foot to await the superior as patiently as he could. Granted, by this point his nerves were worn to a very thin string connected to his hope that things will turn for the better. He felt as though those hopes were in vain though. She seemed stubborn. The man's eyes dulled slightly. He desired to vanish back into the marketplace with a fine glass of wine cupped in one hand and a bag of gold in the other. At least Lady Ravenmore had managed to quiet down for the meanwhile, there was a silver lining. He could finally breathe in the refreshing aroma of peace and quiet. Oh how he had missed it for those brief few minutes. Her family crest should have been a whirlpool. That's how he felt anyway. Such a shame. He could have brushed a nonexistent tear from his eye if Miss. Kingfisher wasn't so judgmental as it was. He simply gave off a sigh to show his dismay. Then he was alerted to the door behind him as the doorknob turned, entering in a woman with unusually blonde hair and a regal robe that rippled behind her. Xavier subtly examined the attire. Upon check listing through the clothes she displayed and whether he approved or not, he continued to watch his superior as she had taken the seat in front of them. She got right to the point, and he was pleased to hear it. The man softened out to his usual, laid back, and pleased self as he listened and chuckled at her first comment. Then Lady Abi'Laark shuffled through her belongings to address their tasks. One part of him was bemused by her offer, never expecting such a thing. He had never seen much less killed a badger before. This would prove to be interesting. The other piece of his mind was wanting to smirk in his companion's direction or give a smug look however. This task was perfect, almost poetic even. She -a noble who bragged about how her family slayed dragons- was reduced to exterminating badgers off of another noble's property. Oh sweet justice, it did him proud. He caught himself grinning but he quickly put it away.
The next words that followed his superiors lips was a pleasant surprise to say the least. He crinkled his brow in his curiosity but held a large smile at her admiration. “I called you in for two things. One, I desperately need to know how you dress yourself so fine. You somehow always look like you belong when you walk into a room, and as for me, well…I own an extremely wealthy part of land, yet I cannot look the part. It is almost embarrassing to notice the stares of other knights and nobility," Lady Abi'Laark announced. He was a little startled but felt warm by her offer. He could see how she could have come across such a problem, not with her attire but the nobles and their blazing stares. For a woman with such wealth, envious royalty would enjoy the opportunity to squash her image. Xavier clicked his tongue at how shameful it was. He was more than willing to help. Afterwards, he listened to the mentioning of restoring a community and being compensated for doing so, which sounded marvelous to him. He had never done either of these duties but he was eager to get started; then he couldn't help but smile when his superior arched in with a cheeky look and inquired about pay. "Simple coin would suffice but you may pay me however you see fit, Lady Abi'Laark. It is my utmost pleasure to be here." He responded sociably while he curled the side of his mustache to think. "I am flattered by your compliment. I do pride myself with style and it is wonderful to be appreciated in that light, though I believe your concern can easily be remedied. I would be delighted to try. I do assure you that this castle has impeccable test however - a work of art if I do say so. Have you traveled to La Verdalle, or have you hired someone from that area to design your estate? I have always had an eye for the theme and I couldn't help but marvel at its appearance here. My escort learnt that firsthand, to his dismay, but ah, I do appreciate such exquisite taste." He gazed up toward the ceiling, as if reminiscing. He gave a sigh of longing before his eyes fell back down toward the noblewoman. His hand lowered. "Do forgive me for my rambling. Lady Ravenmore will likely devour me in five minutes if I am not careful. I will be quite content with atypical payment, and I will help you with your clothing if you so desire it."

Once the door opened, Juniper was relieved that someone would be breaking the silence between her and the imperious man beside her. She could talk to the nobleman of the land and get everything settled to be on her way. Yet when the noble walked around the desk and introduced themselves...the nobleman was a noblewoman?! Her eyes flew open, hardly registering her introduction and greeting. Scrambling for her summoning scroll, she opened it again to see the clear ink print of the ruler of Maintebeau. This had to be a joke! Looking between the paper and the proud woman before her, she was astonished that the knowledge had never come to her. They were neighbors for dragon’s sake, how could she have missed that?! Swallowing her estranged comments, she tried to focus for the sake of hearing her mission. Yet even that was bizarre. Hunting badgers and eliminating their population? What kind of person needed knights to go to the work of proper trained hires? Not that Juniper was any less qualified, but why use nobility for a trade person’s work? She must be in a dream, a nightmare even. She went under her armor to pinch herself, but despite the pain, she was still awake. This was exhausting. So instead of getting her mind clustered, she began to plan. She could set up traps for the initial badgers, see if they would move out simply based on their lowered numbers and dangerous entrances and exits, and if that didn’t stop them she could concoct some potions to poison them or drive them from their homes, hunting them into the forest and driving them off. Badger pelts weren’t bad to decorate with, and the meat was good for the staff when cooked properly. The bones could be ground up for pastes and medicinal uses, the teeth for her own decorations...so many possibilities. Honing in on the woman before her to start asking questions, she was once again knocked from her senses when the woman began to proclaim the wonderful clothing tastes of Xavier and how she wanted his services. What?! She would have stood up had she not been before her superior. The man didn’t have any symbols of his noble family or the lands he came from, why would an apparent Duchess want his help?! Not to mention, the woman didn’t even have anything from her territory on her either, just the colors. She was sitting amongst the craziest people she had ever met, and she had a group of guards that thought she should stop hunting. What kind of world was she living in?! Huffing out a large breath, she leaned her elbows on an armrest and gazed at the duchess with lowered brows, answering her question at the least. If she was going to go insane, might as well get a good payment from it. “Coin is preferrable, and I would also like the rights to hunt a single stag in your territory. I heard they have magnificent antlers this time of year, and it would please me to pursue one on the side of catching the pests in your lands.” At least it would give her a healthy break from dealing with animals that bit like the devil.

As Trinity leaned across the desk, she was pleased to see the man respond so positively to her request. He was by far the best knight to summon for this, and though dealing with badgers may not be his strong suit, he had many other traits that were admirable and perfect. She wasn’t about to ask some woman for advice on how to dress like a duchess - she would be the talk of the kingdom for decades, and she was not about to ruin any part of her reputation. Twirling a wave of hair around her finger, she giggled softly at his compliments of her castle’s style. Yes, his man was well learned and traveled. “Very good eye, Sir Xavier. Yes, when I took a trip to La Verdalle I was entranced by the architecture and how everything complimented each other. I consulted a few architects there, then a few here, to complete an inspired castle with nods to my own territory. Don’t you think it makes the purple and gold just draw your eye?” He apologized for his rambling, and she rolled her eyes, shaking her head with a smile. “Oh no, please, I love to hear about how amazing my abode is,” she teased. “I don’t have many people find such enjoyment in the place I live. They may comment or know the inspiration, but never admire it like I do. We will have plenty of time to tour it, you and I, while you help me sort out my closet and style. If you like, that is. You wouldn’t believe some of the additions to this castle.” The two agreed on the payment, and she nodded, dipping her quill in ink and beginning to scratch a few notes onto a spare piece of parchment off to the side of her desk. “Perfect, I will provide a sum equal to the work you both commit. When I get reports of what has been done, I will pay you accordingly. Lady Ravenmore, I will also pay for each badger you kill, with proper proof of their kill which should not be difficult for a thorough huntress like you, and I will allow you one stag. I will keep a very strict watch on that however, as the deer populations and wildlife are heavily monitored. You are also not to murder my dear tailor here either,” she remarked, gesturing to the man with a laugh before turning her attention to him. “For you, sir, I think part of your payment shall be a free stay and food here, in exchange for your help, then when you join Lady Ravenmore you will be paid the rest in coinage. If that works for you, of course. I believe staying in a Duchess’ lovely castle as an honored guest is quite the offer.” Her smile became amused, and after she set down her quill, she crossed her arms over the desk again. “Upon agreement, you all may stay for a meal before you Lady Ravenmore begin your travels, and Sir Xavier you and I take a little round a bout of the castle before moving to my suite.”

Lady Ravenmore had obviously fussed about the turn of events considering the look she had planted across her face. Eyebrows creasing at a line, exhaling somewhat loudly, she answered their superior's inquiry with the same payment that he wanted and also the rights to hunt a stag on her property. Such a recommendation was unconventional at best, but it was not enough to stir his expression or thoughts in the slightest. Xavier hardly passed her a glance. As a matter of fact, he was in and out of being focused on her reply, busy being all smiles about Lady Abi'Laark's fancy with the architecture from La Verdalle and how she had hired architectures from the country. It was exactly the reply he had hoped to hear. His superior assured him that his rambling was enjoyable and her estate was heavily influenced by La Verdalle itself. "I don’t have many people find such enjoyment in the place I live. They may comment or know the inspiration, but never admire it like I do. We will have plenty of time to tour it, you and I, while you help me sort out my closet and style. If you like, that is. You wouldn’t believe some of the additions to this castle.” He faintly dipped his head as an agreement to her offer, "why my lady, I would be delighted in accompanying you on a tour, I am truly flattered. It is such a shame so many people overlook such marvelous design and take it for granted. Such a pity. I am not one for doing such a thing however, and you have my praise." Xavier answered suavely. The noblewoman had promptly jotted down the payment they required on parchment paper and set regulations for his partner to follow by when hunting. He kept his pleased, entertained smile as Lady Abi'Laark gestured towards him and expressed how she wanted him to be a guest of the estate. She wanted to provide him with a free stay and food. "If that works for you, of course. I believe staying in a Duchess’ lovely castle as an honored guest is quite the offer.” For a first, he wasn't sure how to formulate a proper response. He hung there for a split second in a dreamlike trance before being able to express his gratitude, considering this had been an anticipated surprise. He quickly said, "it is beyond that, m'lady. I am completely mesmerized and I would be absolutely be honored in taking up your offer. You have my sincerest thanks, Lady Abi'Laark." He was baffled that she had even offered. It was so kind of her to propose so much, even if he was tailoring for her. What a marvelous woman! He felt inspired. Visualizing the fantastic future that awaited him in his time here, his superior folded her arms across the desk and said that upon the agreement, they would be fed, Lady Ravenmore would begin her travels, and he would be accompanied by his superior around the castle before situated himself in the guest quarters. He settled his hand over his elevated knee as he came forward slightly in his interest. He answered without any hesitation, "I do believe we have ourselves an agreement. I look forward being of service to you."

Lady Abi’Laark was very pleased when Sir Xavier accepted her offer of a tour, her face beaming. Now here was a noble she could respect. Even if the man was putting up a facade, which she doubted based on his actions and phrasing towards her, it was a relief to have someone visiting that did not only treat her as their superior, but as a fellow appreciative of the style she chose for her castle. The knight was an investment even beyond his hinted tailoring or styling abilities. “You speak nothing but the truth. Every knight can build a castle or a mansion, but the style behind them should be appreciated just as much as the feat itself. The design of a home really speaks to what the knight, noble, or royal wants to convey to their guests. You walked in and saw both the architecture and the decor I used, including my land and family’s colors. That put an impression upon you, and I strive to keep that throughout my castle as well as beyond. I am glad you see the importance as well as I.” She placed the payment agreements on thin cuts of wood, handing them to the two knights along with a quill. They stated what they would be doing to achieve their payment, the form that the payment would be given, and any extra requests or protocols, including Xavier’s free stay and food as well as Lady Ravenmore’s request to hunt a single stag. A duchess had to keep a keen eye on all of her formal dealings after all, especially with two respected knights. After handing them over, she noticed that the Lady scrutinized every sentence and word on the parchment paper. Perhaps a little strange, but it was fair that she wanted to make sure everything was written fairly. The woman was known to be a little uptight when it came to nobility arrangements. Turning her attention back to the male knight as he spoke again, grinning from ear to ear at his implied enthusiasm. “You make a duchess blush, dear sir. I am delighted that we will get to know each other better through this.” Sitting up straight, she arranged her papers a little more, taking back the paper when Lady Ravenmore had signed it, placing it to the side of her desk to dry. “I look forward to utilizing both your talents and services to benefit my lands. My people and the nobility surrounding us will both see your work and thank you, hopefully.”
